I started blogging with WordPress in 2007. Then, as something of a living experiment, I designed and developed my own WordPress theme in late 2011 using the WordPress Twentyeleven theme as a starting point. In 2011, Media Queries and responsive websites were just emerging and I used this site to explore how to design flexible sites that work across devices.
I redesigned the site in 2015 to take advantage of CSS flexbox and again in 2020 to add CSS grids. In 2023, I revised the site using CSS custom properties and leaned into WCAG 2.1 Level AA and in most places AAA standards to prioritize usability and accessibility for all guests.
In 2025-26, I redesigned the site from the ground up as a WordPress block theme using ChatGPT and Claude to help me learn new principles and techniques. During this development cycle, I experienced AI tools evolving from (anoying and time-consuming) copy-and-paste into an app to true integration into Visual Studio Code.
I’ve learned a lot from the process. The knowledge gained from these experiences has been implemented into teaching interaction design and user experience design.

Let’s Go Back In Time
I believe in learning through doing. I am a self-taught front-end coder because I started designing for the web in 1997, when web browsers were first invented. Check out a few examples of my early work.
